Abstract

Printing; acid, basic, mordant, vat and unspecified types of dyes, dyeing with; regenerated celluloses, dyeing.--Dyestuffs are printed or padded upon animal fibres, e.g. wool or silk, or upon natural or regenerated cellulose fibres, in conjunction with a substance of the general formula <FORM:0437977/IV/1> , wherein R is alkyl, phenyl or naphthyl, at least one X is H or an organic residue free from carboxyl groups and n is 1, 2 or 3, which substance is not a dyestuff. The dyestuffs may be of the indigoid, anthraquinonoid, sulphur, azo, di- or triarylmethane, pyrazolone, acridine, quinoline, quinonimine, azine, oxazine or thiazine classes or may be dyestuffs containing metal in complex p combination. The substances of the above general formula may be, for example, alkylsulphonamides, benzenesulphonamide, benzenedialkylsulphonamides, toluenesulphonamides, di(benzenesulphon)amide, m-aminobenzenesulphonamide, halogenbenzenesulphonamides, naphthalenesulphonamides, 1-oxynaphthalene-8 - sulphonamide, tetrahydronaphthalenesulphonamides, benzenedisulphonamides and the salts, e.g. the sodium or potassium salts, of such sulphonamides. The following examples are specified: (1) Cotton is printed with an aqueous paste containing 5 : 5<1>-dichloro-7 : 7<1>-dimethylthioindigo or 1 : 2 : 2<1> : 1<1>-N-dihydroanthraquinone-azine, glycerol, p-toluenesulphonamide, starch tragacanth, British gum thickening, potassium carbonate and sodium formaldehyde-sulphoxylate, and the printed material is dried, steamed, rinsed and soaped at the boil; urea and/or a reduction catalyst such as anthraquinone, an oxyanthraquinone or an anthraquinonesulphonic acid may advantageously be added to the paste. (2) Cotton is similarly printed, using as dyestuff 4 : 4<1>-dimethyl-6 : 6<1>-dichlorothioindigo or 2 : 1 : 2<1> : 1<1>-naphthothioindigo reduced with caustic soda and hydrosulphite at raised temperature prior to printing. (3) Cotton is printed as in (1) with the use as dyestuff of (a) sulphurized carbazole-indophenol, or (b) the product from acenaphthenequinone and 3-oxythionaphthene, or (c) Cibanone gold orange 2R, and/or as sulphonamide of 1-oxynaphthalene-8- sulphonamide; sodium benzylsulphanilate or urea may be added to the printing paste. (4) Cotton is printed with an aqueous paste containing glycerol, starch-tragacanth-British gum thickening, potassium carbonate, sodium formaldehyde-sulphoxylate and a colour made by grinding 4 : 4<1>-dimethyl-6 : 6<1>-dichlorothioindigo with p-toluenesulphonamide and sulphite waste liquor, drying and grinding with sodium carbonate, and the printed material is further treated as in (1). (5) Cotton is printed with an aqueous paste containing glycerol, starch-tragacanth-British gum thickening, potassium carbonate, sodium formaldehydesulphoxylate and a colour made by grinding 2 : 1 : 2<1> - 1<1> - naphthioindigo with sulphite waste liquor, b -oxyanthraquinone and soda ash, evaporating to dryness, further grinding with the sodium salt of anhydrous p-toluenesulphonamide and adding sodium hydrosulphite, and the printed material is dried, steamed, rinsed and soaped at the boil. (6) Cotton is printed with an aqueous paste containing glycerol, starch-tragacanth-British gum thickening, potassium carbonate, caustic soda, sodium hydrosulphite, sodium formaldehydesulphoxylate, p-toluenesulphonamide or tetrahydronaphthalenesulphonamide and the dyestuff obtained by condensing the 2-(p-dimethylamine)anil from 5-methyl-6-chloro-3-oxythionaphthene with 1-chloro-2 : 3-naphthioindoxyl and the printed material is treated as in (1). (7) Silk, loaded or not, wool, chlorinated or not, or regenerated cellulose artificial silk is printed with fan aqueous paste containing glycerol, British gum, ammonium tartrate, p-toluenesulphonamide and a dyestuff which may be (a) a triphenylmethane dyestuff such as that obtainable by condensing benzaldehyde (1 mol.) with ethylbenzylaniline (2 mols.), trisulphonating, oxidizing and treating with p-phenetidine, or (b) a dyestuff containing metal in complex combination, such as the chromium compound of the azo dye from nitrated 1-diazo-2-naphthol-4-sulphonic acid and b -naphthol, used with or without a mordant, e.g. chromium acetate. (8) Cotton, dyed with benzidine \sQ 2 : 8 : 6-aminonaphtholsulphonic acid (1 mol.) and 1 : 8 : 3 : 6-aminonaphtholdisulphonic acid (1 mol.) (both coupled alkaline), is printed with an aqueous discharge paste containing gum thickening, sodium formaldehyde sulphoxylate and p-toluenesulphonamide and the printed material is dried, steamed and rinsed. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the use as the assistant of benzoic acid sulphinide. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
