Abstract
Acid wool or basic dyes, dyeing with; regenerated celluloses, dyeing; printing.--Cellulosic material, e.g. cotton, rayon, linen, jute or ramie, in the form of loose or woven material or of paper, is treated with an aqueous solution of a methylol compound or compounds obtained by condensing formaldehyde with dicyandiamide and/or guanidine and/or heattreated urea, the methylol product is then hardened by heat and the material is thereafter dyed or printed, e.g. with acid or basic dyestuffs. The process described in Specification 433,210 is excluded. Instead of the methylol compound or compounds, there may be used an aqueous mixture of the components. Initial condensation products of formaldehyde with urea or thiourea may be incorporated additionally. Examples are given of the preparation of aqueous solutions of methylol compounds (a) by heating together a mixture of guanidine carbonate and aqueous formaldehyde; (b) by heating together a mixture of dicyandiamide and aqueous formaldehyde; (c) by heating urea at 160--170 DEG C., for about 12 hours and heating the residue with aqueous formaldehyde, (d), (e) and (f), by adding an aqueous solution of dimethylolurea to the products of (a), (b), and (c) respectively. Cotton is immersed in a diluted aqueous solution of the methylol compound or compounds, pressed until double its original weight, heated for 2 minutes at 165 DEG C., soaped for 5 minutes at 95 DEG C., rinsed, dried and dyed with Benzyl green B from a formic acid solution at 55 DEG C. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the following further examples: (1) Cotton, impregnated with solution (a) or (b) above, is pressed, subjected to hardening and soaped, rinsed dried and dyed with Kiton blue A, Orange II, Kiton red O, Alizarine sapphire blue G or Benzyl green B; a table is given showing the effect of the treatments on the quality of the dyeings. (2) Cotton fabric is printed with an aqueous paste containing gum arabic and a condensation product obtained by boiling for 5 minutes a mixture of dicyandiamide and 40 per cent formaldehyde and cooling and the printed fabric is heated for 4 minutes at 110 DEG C., washed for \ba1/2\be hour in soap solution at 50 DEG C., and dyed with Orange II, Kiton blue A, Alizarine sapphire blue G or Solid green JJO, whereby the printed areas are strongly coloured. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
