Abstract

Vat dyes, dyeing with; cellulose esters or ethers, dyeing.--Textile materials in package form, made of or containing cellulose esters or ethers, are dyed with vat dyes by passing through the packages an aqueous liquid containing a free leuco compound of the vat dye (cf. Specification 341,408) or a salt thereof and containing a water-soluble non-alkaline organic liquid and thereafter oxidizing the leuco compound on the materials. The non-alkalineorganic liquid is preferably one of a boiling point below 150 DEG C., specified liquids being methyl, ethyl, propyl and isopropyl alcohols, acetone and methyl ethyl ketone. The usual caustic alkali used to form a salt of the leuco compound and to provide the alkalinity of the vat may be replaced, wholly or in part, by weaker alkali, such as ammonia, methylamine, ethanolamines, propanolamines, benzylamine, cyclohexylamine, dimethylcyclohexylamine, pyridine, alkylpyridines or alkali salts of phenols (cf. Specification 262,506, [Class 15 (ii)]) or alkalinity of the vat due to caustic alkali may be reduced by addition of either salts of weak bases such as ammonia or an amine or weakly acid or salt-forming substances such as phenols, sugars or amino-acids, e.g. protein degradation products. In examples cellulose acetate yarn in the form of wound bobbins is dyed by circulating through it (a) an aqueous liquor at 50 DEG C. containing Ciba blue 2B, isopropyl alcohol, caustic soda, sodium hydrosulphite, turkey red oil and ammonia, with or without an addition of gelatine, or (b) a similar liquor in which the dyestuff is Caledon jade green G, or (c) a similar liquor in which cyclohexylamine is used in place of caustic soda, and thereafter circulating through it an aqueous solution containing soap, hydrogen peroxide and ammonia, washing and drying.
