Abstract

Colour is removed from nitriles such as fibres, yarn, films and straws composed of a polymer or copolymer of acrylonitrile, containing at least 85 per cent acrylonitrile, which have been obtained by wet spinning methods by treating the said articles whilst they are still in the gel state with an aqueous solution containing 1 to 10 per cent hydrogen peroxide or hypochlorous acid in a concentration equivalent to 0.05 to 0.5 per cent available chlorine, the temperature of such treatment being between 50 DEG and 100 DEG C. Copolymers specified are those with vinyl acetate, vinyl chloride, acrylic acid and esters thereof, styrene, butadiene and isobutylene. The polymer or copolymer may be dissolved in dimethyl formamide and spun into water, alcohol, ether or glycerol acids or alkalies and then bleached whilst in the gel state.ALSO:Colour is removed from articles such as fibres, yarn, films and straws composed of a polymer or copolymer of acrylonitrile 1, containing at least 85 per cent acrylonitrile which have been obtained by wet spinning methods by treating the said articles whilst they are still in the gel state with an aqueous solution containing 1 to 10 per cent hydrogen peroxide or hypochlorous acid in a concentration equivalent to 0.05 to 0.5 per cent available chlorine, the temperature of such treatment being between 50 DEG and 100 DEG C.
