Abstract

Permanently-shaped effects are produced on textile fabrics made from wool or wool mixtures by treating them with a 1,5-10% by weight aqueous solution of an ester of thioglycollic acid having a pH of 2,5-5,5, pressing them into the desired shape and then steaming. Suitable thioglycollic acid esters are those of methanol, ethylene glycol and propylene glycol. The solution may contain an anionic or non-ionic dispersing agent, e.g. a C8-C12 fatty alcohol sulphonate, and may be adjusted to the desired pH by the addition of an acid which does not attack the fabric or the thioglycollic acid ester or by the use of thioglycollic acid itself which may still be present in small amounts in the esters used or additionally added. The fabric may be wetted with the solution by the use of a spray pistol made from aluminium or polyvinyl chloride, folded or pleated, steamed, treated by a vacuum hydrosuction and dry ironed. Woven or knitted fabrics made from wool alone or in admixture with natural or regenerated cellulose fibres may be treated.
