Abstract
547,886. Yarns and threads. BELL, A. S., and ANGUS, W. C. March 13, 1941. Nos. 3414 and 7600. [Class 120 (iii)] [Also in Group IV] Yarn of high voluminosity is obtained by spinning together two kinds of staple fibres, one of which is made from filaments of highly polymeric esters or ethers and the other from regenerated cellulose filaments, and then'treating the resulting yarn with an organic shrinking agent for the first kind of staple fibres. As highly polymeric ester or ether there may be used cellulose acetate, formate, propionate, or butyrate, or methyl, ethyl, or benzyl cellulose, or a polyvinyl ester such as a co-polymer of vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate. The cellulose material for the other staple fibre component may be regenerated cellulose obtained from viscose or cuprammonium-cellulose solutions, or saponified cellulose acetate. Yarn made by spinning together a mixture of cellulose acetate and viscose fibres may be immersed in a solution of acetic acid in water, or in a solution of ammonium thiocyanate of such strength that only the cellulose acetate component shrinks. The other component is forced to the surface of the yarn in the form of loops. Other shrinking media which may be used are methyl propionate, propylene chloride ; mixtures of methylene chloride, ethylene chloride or a lower alkyl formate with kerosene, benzene, toluene, or carbon tetrachloride; mixtures of methyl acetate or trichlor-ethylene with methyl or ethyl alcohol; acetone diluted with water. Yarns containing cellulose ester staple fibres mixed with cellulosic fibres may, after treatment with the shrinking media, be given a saponification treatment to reduce the acidul content of the fibre. In an example yarn containing cellulose acetate and viscose fibres is scoured in warm soap solution, washed and dried. It is then treated with an aqueous solution of acetic acid, washed, dried, rinsed with soda solution, saponified by means of dilute caustic soda solution, washed, dried, and dyed with a direct cotton colour.' An oil finish is applied and the yarn is dried. Before the oil treatment, the yarn may be bleached by treatment with a solution of sodium hypo-chlorite and soap. The treated yarn may be used in the production of woven or knitted fabrics.
