Abstract

Fabrics made from cellulosic fibres, e.g. viscose rayon, alone or in admixture with synthetic or aminol fibres, are crease-proofed, shrink-proofed and rendered abrasion resistant by treating them with a mixture of polyvinyl alcohol, sebacic acid, a drying oil and an aldehyde, e.g. formaldehyde, as cross linking agent under acidic conditions, drying and baking and finally simultaneously scouring and oxidizing under alkaline conditions. A suitable composition for treating the fabrics may be prepared by boiling under reflux for 30 minutes a mixture containing 100 cc. of polyvinyl acetate, 75 cc. of castor oil and 100 cc. of a 10% solution of caustic soda pellets in ethyl alcohol, cooling and then adding 50 cc. of formaldehyde diluted with 25 cc. of a 10% solution of caustic soda in ethyl alcohol together with 10 cc. of concentrated phosphoric acid to adjust the pH value to 4.5. The fabric may be padded with the composition, dried, baked for 3 minutes at 150 DEG C. and scoured for 10 minutes at 80 DEG C. in an aqueous solution of soda ash, sodium perborate and a detergent.
