Abstract
Unscoured vegetable or regenerated cellulose fibres or mixtures thereof with other natural or synthetic fibres are treated, prior to bleaching or dyeing, with an aqueous solution of an inorganic per-acid at a pH below 7 and at a temperature of 15 DEG to 80 DEG C. The per-acid may be per-mono- or per-di-sulphuric acid, or a solution of the corresponding inorganic acid and hydrogen peroxide. Unscoured fibres of cotton, linen or jute, or mixtures thereof with regenerated cellulose, nylon or wool may be treated. The fibres may be subsequently bleached with hydrogen peroxide or subsequently bleached and dyed. In Example 5, a cotton-cellulose acetate fabric is treated with permonosulphuric acid at 20 DEG C. and pH of 1.7 followed by rinsing and treatment with hydrogen peroxide, sodium oxalate and sodium pyrophosphate at 65 DEG C.
