Abstract

Cellulosic fibres are bleached by a process comprising the steps of (A) treating them with an aqueous alkaline solution containing 0,1-1,5% by weight of ammonium hydroxide at 160 DEG -250 DEG F. for at least 15 minutes, (B) partially bleaching them in an aqueous alkaline hypochlorite solution having a pH of 9-12, (C) scouring them in an aqueous bisulphite solution having a pH of 1-5 and (D) bleaching them in aqueous hydrogen peroxide solution. Prior to step (A) the fibres may be desized using an enzyme desizing solution, e.g. an amylase solution, and may then be washed in warm water at a temperature of 90 DEG -160 DEG F. for 3-15 minutes. The alkaline solution used in step (A) may be a sodium carbonate solution containing not more than 2% by weight of sodium carbonate and 0,1-1,5% by weight of ammonium hydroxide and having a pH of 9-11,5. Step (B) may be carried out at 50 DEG -150 DEG F. for 30 minutes-1 hour using a sodium hypochlorite solution having a concentration in the range of from 3-32 grams per litre and a pH of 9-12. The fibres may be scoured in step (C) with a 0,1-1% by weight aqueous sodium bisulphite solution having a pH of 1-5 for 5-30 minutes at 50 DEG -120 DEG F. and after washing may be treated in step (D) with hydrogen peroxide solution having a concentration of 0,2-1,4% by weight and a pH of 8,5-11 for 1-3 hours at 70 DEG -185 DEG F. The hydrogen peroxide solution may contain 0,1-2% by weight of sodium silicates of the general formula Na2O(SiO2)x in which x=2-4. Fabrics comprising cotton or linen fibres alone or in admixture with wool, viscose rayon or nylon fibres may be treated.
