Abstract

Textile material formed predominantly of regenerated cellulose is stabilized against shrinkage under repeated laundry washings, by treating it with an aqueous solution containing the equivalent of 15-120 c.c. of 30 per cent by weight glyoxal solution and 0.125-4 grams of an acidic catalyst per litre of treating solution, and polyvinyl alcohol in an amount sufficient to produce the desired finish and stiffness of the material, and baking the treated textile material at a temperature of 212-350 DEG F. for 40-2 minutes so as to effect a reaction between the glyoxal and the fibres of the material. The material may be in the form of fibres, yarns or fabrics. The treatment may also impart resistance to creasing and crushing. Small proportions of amino-aldehyde water-dispersible thermosetting resins may be incorporated in the treating solution. Urea-formaldehyde, butyl urea-formaldehyde and melamine-formaldehyde are specified. In an example, a mixed fabric containing viscose rayon and cellulose acetate rayon is impregnated with an aqueous solution of glyoxal, oxalic acid, polyvinyl alcohol and urea-formaldehyde. The fabric is squeezed, dried on a tenter frame at 180 DEG F. and cured in a tenter oven or loop drier oven in circulating air at 280 DEG F. The fabric is soaped, rinsed and dried. In another example, the impregnating solution contains urea - formaldehyde and melamine-formaldehyde as well as glyoxal and polyvinyl alcohol. Another example describes the treatment of a mixed fabric containing spun viscose fibres and casein fibres. Specifications 585,679 and 586,637 are referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes also the treatment of textile materials formed of cotton, linen, casein, soya bean protein and other fibres. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
