Abstract

669,772. Waterproofing textile fabrics. STEVENS, A. H. (National Lead Co.). May 23, 1949, No. 13677/49. Class 140. Textile materials are made water-repellent by impregnating the material with an aqueous solution of a zirconium compound of a watersoluble fatty acid and then treating the impregnated material to form a water-insoluble compound. The impregnation may be carried out at a temperature below the decomposition point of the compound and the temperature of the impregnated material then raised above the decomposition point whereby the compound is changed to a water insoluble compound, or the impregnated material may be treated to raise the pH of the solution therein, whereby the compound is changed to a water-insoluble compound. In example (I) a textile material of cotton, artificial silk whose chief ingredient is cellulose or one of its derivatives, wool, or silk is saturated with a 1 per cent solution of the acetic acid co-ordination compound of basic zirconyl acetate (ZrO(OH) (CH 3 COO)CH 3 COOH) at a temperature below 40‹ C. Excess liquid is removed by centrifuging or wringing and then the temperature of the material is raised to 80‹ C. in a steam chest to cause hydrolysis of the zirconium compound. The material may then be dried at 100-105‹ C. or washed in warm water prior to drying. According to example (II) the textile material impregnated as in example (I) is introduced into a dilute solution of borax, or other alkaline salt containing a negative ion which does not form an insoluble compound with zirconium, in order to raise the pH of solution and precipitate the basic zirconyl acetate ZrO(OH) (CH 3 COO) within and upon the surface of the fibres of the material. In other examples the processes of examples (I) and (II) are repeated using a 1 per cent solution of the sodium acetate co-ordination compound of basic zirconyl acetate, and the formic acid co-ordination compound of basic zirconyl formate ZrO(OH) (COOH)HCOOH. A textile material of cellulose, regenerated cellulose, artificial silk whose chief ingredient is cellulose or one of its derivatives, may be treated with a solution of the acetic acid co-ordination compound of basic zirconyl acetate or the formic acid co-ordination compound of basic zirconyl formate at a temperature below 40‹ C. Excess solution is removed and the sample dried slowly to allow the acetic acid portion of the molecule to react with the cellulose.
