Abstract

The crease-resistance of natural or regenerated cellulose textile material, e.g., viscose rayon or cotton fibres and fabrics, is increased by impregnation with an aqueous solution containing an aliphatic dialdehyde or aliphatic a-ketoaldehyde having a straight or branched chain of not more than 10 carbon atoms and an acid catalyst comprising an aliphatic aldehyde carboxylic acid or an aliphatic keto carboxylic acid, the keto group being in alpha position to the carboxylic group, and finally drying and heating the impregnated textile at a temperature, for example, not exceeding 100 DEG C. The amount of acid catalyst in the solution is insufficient to lower the pH below 3 Specified aldehydes are glyoxal, methylglyoxal, succinic dialdehyde, adipic dialdehyde, glyceric dialdehyde and mesoxalic aldehyde. Specified acid catalysts are glyoxylic, and pyro-racemic acids. To the solution may also be added optical bleaching agents such as the sodium salt of ali- or heterocyclic sulphonic acids having conjugated double bonds together with non-ionogenic emulsifiers such as polyethylene oxide compounds; and softeners such as fatty acid ethers or esters of trialkanolamines, and polyethylene glycol. The handle may be improved by the addition to the solution of water-soluble cellulose derivatives, e.g., cellulose glycolic acid and hydroxyethyl cellulose. Examples are given.
