Abstract

Artificial cellulosic textile materials are rendered capable of repelling water by incorporating in the spinning solution a urea derivative or an aliphatic carboxylic acid amide containing an alkyl radicle of at least 11 carbon atoms, and then condensing the derivative with an aliphatic aldehyde. The necessary condensation is effected by heating the materials charged with the urea &c. derivative to, for example, 100--140 DEG C., if desired, in an acid or alkaline medium. As an alternative, the condensation product of the urea &c. derivative and the aldehyde may be added to the spinning solution, and the subsequent heating carried out with or without the presence of aldehyde. The process may also be adapted to the treatment of cellulosic textiles. The aldehyde may be used as a solution, or in the vapour phase, in which latter case the heating step may be carried out simultaneously. The following are suitable derivatives: lauric acid amide; stearoyl-methylamide, -butylamide and -octadecylamide; monododecylurea; monoctadecylurea; stearoylurea. In examples, the following media are used: a pyridine solution of octadecyl-heptadecylurea; an emulsion of stearinamide containing formaldehyde and preferably lactic acid, the emulsifying agent being the reaction product of ethylene oxide and octadecenyl alcohol; a pyridine solution of methylolstearinamide; a carbon-tetrachloride solution of methylol-stearinamide, and afterwards a lactic acid solution; a lactic or glycollic acid solution, followed by a carbon-tetrachloride solution of the condensation product of montanic acid amide and formaldehyde; a methylenechloride solution of carbamic acid octadecyl ester.ALSO:To produce an emulsion of stearinamide there is used as the emulsifying agent the reaction product of ethylene oxide and octadecenyl alcohol. The emulsion also contains formaldehyde and lactic acid.
