Abstract
Textile materials are rendered crease resistant by treating at a pH value between 2,5 and 3,3 in the presence of free acids (except phosphoric acid) or acid-reacting mineral salts, with aldehydes derivable from monovalent alcohols or substances which give off such aldehydes, and then heated to 130--170 DEG C. The process is conducted in the absence of organic substances containing basic groups such as are described in Specification 426,956. The preferred reagent is formaldehyde; the following may be used: acetaldehyde, furfurol, polymerization and addition products such as aldehyde-ammonia and aldehyde-bisulphite compounds. Suitable acids are formic, acetic, citric, tartaric, adipic, phthalic, organic sulpho acids, mineral acids or acid-reacting mineral salts. Fibre-protecting substances may be added, e.g. glue, gelatine, carbohydrates, sugars, soluble cellulose derivatives such as methyl cellulose; the protecting substance should not be one which resinifies with the aldehyde. In examples: (1) Viscose goods are treated for 2 mins. at 30 DEG C. with tartaric acid, calcium chloride and formaldehyde in water, (pH value 2,9), squeezed and dried for 20 mins. at 130 DEG C. For protecting the fibres, glycerine may be added; (2) Lining serge is treated for 2 mins at 30 DEG C. with tartaric acid, glycerine and formaldehyde in water, (pH value 3,1), drying for 10 mins. at p 150 DEG C.; (3) Viscose crape fabric is treated for a few minutes at 30 DEG C. with a solution of formaldehyde, glucose and tartaric acid in water, (pH value 2,9), centrifuged and dried for 20 mins. at 150 DEG C. Specification 455,472 also is referred to.
