Abstract

Cellulose hydroxy-paraffin-monocarboxylic acids, which are insoluble in water but soluble in aqueous alkali, such as are prepared according to the process of Specification 231,809, are used for the manufacture of articles or materials such as:-artificial threads; films; coating materials; dressings; sizes; book cloth; artificial leather; adhesives and cements; plastic masses; thickening and fixing agents for pigments in textile printing. The cellulose derivatives are used in solution in aqueous alkalies, and with such solution may be mixed cellulose hydrate or hydrocellulose soluble in alkalies, viscose, albuminous substances, proteins, glue, amyloid, starch or the like, dextrin, gums, pectous materials, tragasol, resins, artificial resins, glycerine, di-glycerine, poly-glycerine, glycols, sugars, soaps, syrups, and solts of fatty-sulphonic acid such as turkey-red oil, and there may also be added a suitable filling-agent or pigment. The formed article, if desired after previous drying, is fixed by treatment with such precipitating-agents as are used in the treatment of viscose and ammoniacal-copper-oxide cellulose. According to the examples, films and artificial threads are made from solutions of cellulose glycollic acid or cellulose lactic acid, in some cases with the addition of viscose; finishes for textile materials by applying one or more coatings of a solution of cellulose glycollic acid; a paste for textile printing consisting of a solution of cellulose glycollic acid and a suitable pigment; a book cloth by applying to a porous fabric one or more coatings of a cellulose glycollic acid with or without a filler and with or without a softening-agent such as castor oil. Specifications 177,810, 203,346, and 203,347 also are referred to.ALSO:Cellulose hydroxy-paraffin, monocarboxylic acids such as are prepared according to the process of Specification 231,809, [Class 2 (ii), Cellulose &c.], are used for the manufacture of dressings, sizes, adhesives and cements. The cellulose derivatives are used in solution in aqueous alkalies, and with such solution may be mixed cellulose hydrate or hydrocellulose soluble in alkalies, viscose, albuminous substances, proteins, glue, amyloid, starch or the like, dextrin, gums, pectous materials, tragasol, resins, artificial, resins, glycerine, di-glycerine, poly-glycerine, glycols, sugars, soaps, syrups, and salts of fatty-sulphonic acid such as turkey-red oil, and there may also be added a suitable filling agent or pigment. The treated material, if desired, after previous drying, is fixed by treatment with such precipitating-agents as are used in the treatment of viscose and ammoniacal-copper-oxide cellulose. According to the examples, finishes for textile materials comprise the application of one or more coatings of a solution of cellulose glycollic acid; a paste for textile printing consists of a solution of cellulose glycollic acid and a suitable pigment; a book cloth is obtained by applying to a porous fabric one or more coatings of a cellulose glycollic acid with or without a filler and with or without a softening-agent such as castor oil. Specifications 177,810, 203,346, and 203,347, [all in Class 2 (ii), Cellulose &c.], also are referred to.
