Abstract

Textile materials of vegetable origin are treated with a halohydrin, in particular the halohydrin of a polyalcohol, in the presence of alkali, in order to impart to them a silky gloss or an elastic finish. Suitable halohydrins are a -monochlorhydrin, epichlorhydrin and ethylene chlorhydrin; and the preferred alkali is caustic soda, although others such as alkali sulphides may be employed. The treatments with halohydrin and alkali may take place simultaneously or in either sequence; and the materials to be treated may be either in the crude state or they may be subjected to a preliminary treatment such as boiling with dilute alkali, bleaching or mercerizing, or they may have been prepared by treatment with an hydrolyzing- or gelatinizing-agent such as strong mineral acid, ammoniacal copper oxide solution or thiocyanate solution. If the material is first treated with alkali, a caustic soda solution of 10-50 per cent strength, preferably 12-40 per cent strength, is suitable, and the quantity used may be 2-10 times the weight of the material, but usually 2-4 times the weight of the latter will be sufficient: the preliminary treatment with caustic soda may be conducted at 10-50 DEG C, although if the lye is not too weak, room temperature is adequate: the lye used may contain some alcohol; the halohydrin is applied immediately after the caustic alkali treatment, or p after standing, and it may be brought into contact with the material as a solution or in suspension, a thickening- or binding-agent being, if desired, added; it is sufficient to employ not more than two molecular proportions of halohydrin for each molecular proportion of caustic alkali, although in most cases 0.3-0.75 molecular proportions are sufficient. The material, after treatment, is washed optionally after drying; or it may be advantageously treated with an inorganic or organic acid, or an acid salt, or an ammonium or other salt, or with tannin or formaldehyde solution; or with any other precipitant for viscose or ammoniacal-copper-oxide cellulose.
