Abstract

Textile materials are impregnated with urea or the like and formaldehyde, or with a soluble partial condensate thereof, and an acid or potentially-acid substance, part of the resin components converted to a non-resinous condensation product and the remainder converted into resin by subsequent drying and heating, whereby the material is delustred in addition to the effect produced by the resin. The heating may be effected in the presence of additional formaldehyde or urea to produce an anticrease effect. In examples: (1) a textile material is impregnated with water solution of a urea formaldehyde pre-condensate, squeezed, the damp material immersed in dilute hydrochloric acid until delustred, washed, dried, impregnated with formaldehyde containing tartaric acid, squeezed, dried and heated for 2 mins. at 170 DEG C.; (2) material is impregnated with a solution of a urea-formaldehyde precondensate containing tartaric acid, allowed to stand without drying until precipitation of methylene urea takes place, dried and heated for 2 mins. at 170 DEG C. The treated material may be subjected to a swelling treatment as described in Specifications 437,361 and 437,441. Specifications 291,473 and 449,243 also are referred to.
