Abstract

Textiles are improved by treatment with a condensation product of an aldehyde or a substance which yields an aldehyde with an aminotriazine or a derivative thereof containing at least one replaceable hydrogen atom. Dressing or anticreasing effects may be produced by use of a solution of the condensation product with or without addition of a dressing agent such as starch or a softening agent followed by hardening and mat effects may be produced by treatment with a dispersion of the hardened product. Suitable aminotriazines include melamine, melam, melem, melone, ammelin, ammelide, formoguanamine, 2-chloro- or 2-p-oxyphenyl-4 : 6 - diamino - 1 : 3 : 5 - triazine, 2 - phenyl-4 - amino - 6 - oxy - 1 : 3 : 5 - triazine, arylmelamines, alkylmelamines or aralkylmelamines and iso-derivatives of aminotriazines. Suitable aldehydes include formaldehyde, paraformaldehyde, benzaldehyde and furfurol. In examples: (1) a bleached cotton fabric is impregnated with a liquor obtained by stirring potato starch with cold water followed by boiling with more water to which has been added a solution obtained by condensing melamine with neutral aqueous formaldehyde, the fabric being dried and subsequently heated; (2) viscose artificial silk yarn is treated with a dispersion of a melamine-formaldehyde resin prepared by dissolving a hardened condensation product in concentrated hydrochloric acid followed by dilution with water and neutralisation with caustic soda, glaubers salt being added subsequently to the bath; (3) bleached cotton voile is impregnated with a solution of a methylolmelamine and a monocarboxylic acid ester from sulphophthalic acid and cetyl alcohol and the impregnated fabric, after drying and heating, is soaped in an aqueous bath containing Marseilles soap and ammonia. Specifications 455,008, 468,677, and 468,746 are referred to. The Provisional Specification describes in general the manufacture of amino-triazinealdehyde condensates.
