Abstract

Artificial silk yarn or fabric is loaded by impregnating with synthetic resin components and with one or more water soluble organic compounds of high boiling point and high specific gravity, the material being heated to insolubilize the resin and fix the loading agent. Preferred resins are of the formaldehyde-urea type; suitable loading agents are polyhydric alcohols, their polymers or water-soluble derivatives, or mixtures thereof, e.g. glycerol, diethylene glycol, mono-chlorhydrin, mono-, di- and triacetin. The material is treated with the loading agent together with formaldehyde and urea or thiourea, or an early intermediate condensation product, and a catalyst; the material is subsequently heated to 180--210 DEG C. for 30--60 seconds. In an example, a viscose cr<\>zepe thread is impregnated with its own weight of a mixture of a urea-formaldehyde condensate, lactic acid and diethylene glycol, dried, heated to 200 DEG C. for 50 seconds and washed in slightly alkaline water; after drying, the fabric has gained in weight by 20 per cent.
