Abstract
Textile materials suitable for use in making garments having permanent creases, folds or pleats and which may be shipped, stored and subsequently processed by the garment manufacturer are produced by impregnating cellulosic textile materials, e.g. fabrics made from cotton, regenerated cellulose or linen alone or in admixture with other natural or synthetic fibres, with a polymerisable thermosetting resin precondensate, a catalyst for the polymerisation thereof and humectant which is neutral or weakly acidic (i.e. wherein the pH of an aqueous solution is not less than 4) in an amount effective to inhibit premature reaction and polymerisation of the resin precondensate and then partially drying the textile material without substantially reacting the polymerisable resin. The thermosetting resin may be a ureaformaldehyde, dimethylol ethylene urea, dimethylol dihydroxy ethylene urea, dimethylol alkyl triazone, dimethylol hexahydropyrimidone, hexamethoxymethyl melamine, dimethylol ethyl carbamate or dimethoxymethyl uron resin and suitable catalysts are magnesium chloride, zinc chloride, zinc nitrate, aluminium chloride and zinc fluoborate. The humectant may be calcium chloride, bromide or idoide, a cobaltous, nickel or strontium halide, manganous chloride, nickel nitrate, glycerol or a polyethylene glycol of the formula HO CH2CH2(OCH2CH2)nOH in which n has a value of 1-50. The treating composition, which may also comprise a polyethylene emulsion, may be applied to the textile material as an aqueous solution containing 0.5-20% by weight of the humectant by padding. The treated textile materials may be used for the manufacture of garments or garment parts, e.g. sleeves, collars, cuffs or trouser legs, arranged in creases, folds or pleats and then cured to insolubilise the resin.
