Abstract
Textile fabrics are impregnated with an aqueous solution of a thermo-setting resin-forming material containing a non-waxy sulphonated oil in amount sufficient to prevent sticking to glazing rolls, said oil having more than 8 carbon atoms in the chain, drying, passing through a heated glazing calender and washing to remove the oil and unreacted material. The finish obtained is durable and lustrous and the fabric has a softer hand and a higher tear strength than if subjected to the same treatment in the absence of the oil. Sulphonated castor oil is preferred, and it is used in amount from 2 to 60 per cent of the concentration of the resin-forming materials. Suitably a methylol-urea is used in concentration in the bath from 10 to 30 per cent. After impregnation the fabric is dried without curing the resin, and glazed at a temperature sufficiently high to cause polymerization of the resin-forming material. Acid salts such as ammonium phosphate to catalyze the polymerization, and softening agents such as ethyl cellulose may also be present in the bath. In an example, a bath is prepared containing water-miscible urea-formaldehyde precondensate 12.5 lbs., sulphonated castor oil 7.5 lbs., ammonium phosphate 1.25 lbs., ethyl cellulose 1.5 lbs. and water to 100 lbs. Cotton fabric is impregnated with this solution, air-dried below 200 DEG F., passed through a friction glazer at 320 DEG F. and washed in a conventional manner with mild soap, followed by a water rinse.
