Abstract

Cellulose fibres, more particularly in the form of cotton and artificial silk fabrics, but applicable also to loose staple fibre, are rendered hydrophobic by applying to or incorporating therein a water-soluble salt of an amine containing at least one aliphatic or cycloaliphatic residue of at least four carbon atoms, and a compound of not more than ten carbon atoms and containing two or more amino or imino groups or nitrogen atoms, and simultaneously or subsequently causing reaction between the salt of the amine and an aldehyde on or in the fibre. Salts of the following amines may be employed; stearylamine, octylamine, dodecyl-, amine, cetylamine, oleylamine, ricinolamine chlorocetylamine, ethylene-diaminomonostearic acid, N-octodecylethylenediamine and ethylenediaminomonopalmitic acid amide, generally in the form of their acetates or formates. The additional compound may be melamine, ammeline, ammelide, hexamethylenetetramine, ethylenediamine, urea, thiourea, guanidine, biguanide guanylurea, cyanuric acid, biuret, dicyandiamide, dicyandiamidine, thiodicyandiamidine, sodium cyanamide, ortho-, para- or metaphenylene - diamine, and diaminopyridine and its derivatives such as its methylol compounds. Specification 463,300 is referred to in the Provisional Specification.
