Abstract

511,441. Delustring ; dyeing; biguanide derivatives. GROVES, W. W. (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). Feb. 17, 1938, No. 4958. [Classes 2 (iii) and 15 (ii)] Oxyalkylated biguanides, prepared by treating an alkyl biguanide in which, the alkyl residue contains at least 10 carbon atoms with an alkylene oxide, are used for treating textiles for delustring, softening, levelling and in dyeing. The compounds may be used in the form of the soluble salts which they form with organic carboxylic or sulphonic acids, e.g., salicylates, glycollates and lactates. In examples, (1) Octadecyl biguanide (obtained by reaction of octadecylamine with dicyandiamide) is trated at raised temperature with ethylene oxide whilst stirring, and the base formed converted to salicylate; the resulting salicylate -of polyoxyethylated octadecyl biguanide imparts a soft feel to viscose and copper silk. Substantive dyeings are unaffected. (2) Zinc sulphide or titanium dioxide is made into a paste with water or alcohol and the product of example 1 ; the paste is dried and the 'resulting' powder makes a stable emulsion which delustres and softens artificial silk ; dyeings are unaffected. Other examples produce similar results employing other salts such as the hydroculoride, laurate and salicylate. Enhanced effects are obtained by adding an alcohol of at least'10 carbon atoms in which the carbon chain may be interrupted by one or more hetero-atom groups, e.g., - 0-, -CO.O- and -CO.NR-, including, fatty alcohols and their esters and ethers containing free OH groups, also esters and amides of soapforming fatty acids containing OH groups. Dyeing and matting may be etfected simultaneously, e.g., a pigment and a salt of the oxyalkylated biguanide is introduced into the dyeing bath.. The following acids form watersoluble salts with the oxyalkylated biguanideswhich do not alter the shade of dyed fabrics :- toluene-sulphonic-acid, di-isobutyl-naphthalene sulphonic acid, octadecyl-sulphonic acid, oleylmethylauride dodecyl sulphuric acid ester, tartaric acid, benzoic acid and naphthenic acid. Natural silk, wool, cotton, and other natural fibres as well as regenerated cellulose and cellulose organic derivatives may be treated according to the invention.
