Abstract

Textile materials comprising fibres of cellulose acetate of acetyl value (calculated as acetic acid) above 56 per cent are partially saponified so as to reduce the acetyl value to 53-55 per cent. The treatment improves the dyeing properties of the materials. Although of relatively high acetyl value, materials may be obtained which have affinity both for cotton dyes and for cellulose acetate dyes of the dispersed insoluble kind and which can be dyed with cotton dyes without substantial variation in depth of colour. The materials may be treated in the form of stretched or unstretched yarns in hank, skein, bobbin, cone, or other package. They may be treated in the form of staple fibres or in fabric form. Travelling yarns may be passed slowly and continuously through a heated saponifying bath. Saponification is preferably effected by treatment of the materials with a 1-5 per cent solution of sodium carbonate at 80 DEG -100 DEG C. The heat resistance, including resistance to glazing by a hot iron, is also improved by the treatment. The cellulose acetate fibres or yarns may be associated with wool, silk, cotton, or regenerated cellulose fibres. In an example cellulose acetate of acetyl value 59 per cent is spun into filaments from a solution in methylene chloride and alcohol. The yarns obtained are immersed for 1 hour in 2.5 per cent sodium carbonate solution at 97 DEG C. until the acetyl value is about 55 per cent. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the saponification of materials of cellulose acetate of combined acetic acid content of 54-59 per cent or of another cellulose organic ester of equivalent degree of esterification, and the saponification may be continued till the combined acetic acid content has been reduced to 85-93 per cent of its original value. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
