Abstract

323,846. Ellis, G. B., (Soc. pour la Fabrication de la Soie Rhodiaseta). Oct. 30, 1928. Yarns and threads.-Artificial silk threads composed of cellulose esters or ethers, particularly of cellulose acetate, are reduced in denier by stretching in the dry state while the threads are heated to a temperature such as will render the thread substance plastic, for example, in the case of cellulose acetate to 185‹ C. Operating in this manner it is possible to stretch the threads to the extent of 100 per cent or more, and moreover to obtain filaments of 0.1 deniers. The stretched threads have increased wet and dry strengths, and a higher elasticity; the lustre may also suffer variation, particularly if the stretching is carried out at lower temperatures when the threads become more and more matt in appearance. The stretching may take place continuously with the spinning of the threads, or during later operations such as throwing, doubling, skeining or warping; and it may be carried out either as a continuous operation by passage between one winding device and another moving at a higher peripheral speed, or by stretching in the form of skeins. The filaments of the threads to be subjected to the stretching treatment may be twisted or parallel. With the cellulose ester or ether composing the thread there may be mixed softening-agents such as triphenyl phosphate. Specifications 198,023; 233,384, [Class 2 (ii), Cellulose &c.], and 277,089 are referred to.
