Abstract
527,121. Stretching yams, threads &c. SOC. ITALIANA PIRELLI. March 31, 1939, No. 10167. Convention date, March 31, 1938. Drawings to Specification. [Class 120 (iii)] Cotton yarns, threads, or cords, are wetted with water or other liquid incapable of impairing the natural properties of the component fibres, and are stretched while wet under a constant load and for a sufficient time to result on subsequent drying of the thread under tension, in a permanent elongation accompanied by the elimination of differences of mechanical strength properties from point to point along the length of the thread. The stretched materials are dried under conditions of tension such as to maintain them at the degree of deformation to which they have been brought in the stretching operation. The stretching may be carried beyond the elastic limit of the threads, but the wetting and drying treatments result in the stretch being made permanent. The treated materials show a greater resistance to breaking, and a uniformity along their length in the stress-strain curve characteristics. The materials may be wetted with warm or hot water. Preferably the stretching load is about 25-75 per cent of the breaking load and is applied for about 1 minute. After drying, it is preferred to wind the thread under a tension which is not in excess of the tension applied during stretching.
