Abstract

Artificial threads are obtained by extruding or drawing a solid ethylene polymer in fluid form under such conditions that the material solidifies immediately it becomes attenuated. The material to be spun may be in molten form or in the form of a hot concentrated solution in a volatile organic solvent, e.g. benzene. The ethylene polymer preferably has a molecular weight of over 6,000. The strength of the threads may be increased by stretching them in the cold condition, in the form of a bundle or hank, for example, to about five times their original length. The threads may be woven into fabrics, or may be cut into staple fibres, twisted and pulled into yarn or twist, and then woven. Specification 471,590 is referred to.
