Abstract
Regenerated cellulose textile fibres are treated for a short time with liquid ammonia at a temperature between -60 DEG C. and -35 DEG C. and are then rinsed in cold water. The fibres may be in the unwoven condition or in the form of a woven fabric. In one example, a fleece of regenerated cellulose staple fibres is dipped for 6 minutes into liquid ammonia at -60 DEG C. and then rinsed in cold water and dried. In another example, a fabric woven from regenerated cellulose staple fibre yarns is treated in the same manner except that, when washed with cold water, it is held under tension in a tentering frame to prevent undue shrinkage. The treatment improves the "crimping intensity and the "loop strength" of the fibres and reduces their "swelling value" without reducing their tenacity or elongation.
