Abstract

312,197. Lilienfeld, L. Nov. 21, 1927. Yarns, threads &c., treating with liquids, gases and vapours.-The extensibility and elasticity of artificial silk &c. yarns and threads is increased by treatment with alkali and carbon disulphide in either order or simultaneously under such conditions that xanthogenation to a limited degree is produced, the materials being maintained in the untensioned condition during the treatment or if tensioned the tension being removed preferably before the material leaves the alkali bath so that shrinkage may take place. After the treatment with alkali and carbon disulphide, the material is treated with an acid, ammonium sulphate or other bath such as is used in the spinning of viscose silk, or it may be steamed. The process may be applied to the yarns or threads either in the dry finished condition or as they leave the spinning bath or at some later stage in their manufacture. The process is applicable to viscose silk, cuprammonia silks and cellulose nitrate silks. Specification 281,352 is referred to.
