Abstract

Cellulose ester yarns are saponified non-uniformly along their length and are then subjected to stretching in the presence of a medium which has a greater softening action on some parts of the yarn than on others. Portions of the yarn may be completely saponified and other portions unsaponified prior to the stretching process. The softening medium may have a greater effect on the less saponified than on the more saponified portions or vice versa. The softening medium may have a further saponifying action. The products generally have a varying affinity for dyestuffs as well as a varying denier along their length. By further saponification of the products, regenerated cellulose yarns of varying denier may be obtained. The change in the degree of saponification along the length of the yarn may be gradual or abrupt so that on dyeing sharp or gradual colour changes or cross-dyed effects may be obtained. The saponifying agent may be caustic soda or potash, sodium silicate, methylamine or other aliphatic amine. Saponification may be superficial or uniform through the cross-section of the filaments. The softening medium may be steam, hot water, or an organic solvent. The yarns are treated preferably while travelling. In examples, cellulose acetate yarns while travelling, or in hanks are treated at intervals along their length with caustic soda and sodium acetate, or portions of the yarns are coated with wax and then the whole is immersed in caustic soda solution. The yarns are then passed through aqueous dioxane, acetone, glycol mono methyl ether, or ethyl lactate, or ethyl acetate and toluene, and stretched while in the softened state. The yarns may be weaved, knitted, or netted together or with other textiles to form fabrics or other materials showing colour effects when dyed. Specifications 332,263, [Class 15 (ii)], 370,430, 371,461, 412,600, 417,220, 428,224, 429,103, 430,349, 430,350, 430,351, 430,489, 432,027, and 432,028 are referred to.
