Abstract

By subjecting to a delustring operation filaments, yarns, &c made of cellulose acetate or other cellulose esters or of cellulose ethers, which have been differentially stretched at intervals along their length, differential lustre effects are produced, the fabrics exhibiting a streaky or mottled effect. The differential stretching may take place during manufacture or subsequently thereto, the yarn being stretched either in the dry state or after wetting with water or a solvent or swelling agent; and it may be carried out by the methods of Specification 371,910. The yarn to be stretched may be in the untwisted state, or it may be of medium or high twist; after stretching, the yarn may be twisted. The stretching may be such as to rupture certain of the filaments so producing an imitation spun fibre yarn, as described in Specification 397,137. The intermittently stretched yarns may be used for the warp or the weft or both, and they may be associated with wool, cotton, or silk yarns or with artificial yarns of different character or even with the same type of yarn but of uniform properties along its length. The delustring may be achieved as by treatment with hot or boiling aqueous media or with moist steam; and it may be local as by the application of a resist or the employment of a stencil. A differential crinkling effect consequent on the differential stretching may also be produced during the delustring operation. By a suitable choice of dyes during a subsequent or simultaneous dyeing operation, for example, by the use of basic dyes, differential colour effects may also be produced. In examples, a cellulose acetate fabric having a weft of normal yarn and a warp of intermittently stretched yarn is delustred by means of saturated steam; and a mixed fabric having a warp of viscose yarn and a weft of intermittently stretched cellulose acetate yarn is delustred in a boiling aqueous bath containing textile soap, turkey red oil, and xylene. Specifications 323,790, [Class 2 (ii), Cellulose &c.], 370,040, and 375,424 also are referred to.
