Abstract
Filaments, threads, yarns, or the like of organic esters of cellulose, which at some stage of their manufacture have been stretched, or fabrics containing the same, are saponified by applying the saponifying agent to the materials while they are travelling and immediately drying under the influence of heat to effect rapid saponification. The products have a high tenacity and an affinity for cotton colours. The stretching, which should preferably produce an extension of the yarns of the order of 200 to 500 per cent. or more, and a tenacity exceeding 1.5 gms. per denier, may be carried out according to the process of Specification 277,089, 323,790, [both in Class 2 (ii), Cellulose &c.], or 370,430, or simultaneously with the production of the yarns by the process of Specification 340,324, 340,325, 340,326, 340,436, 340,437, 343,062, or 378,858. The saponifying agent may be applied to the travelling materials by bath treatments or padding methods, the drying being effected by passing the materials over heated rollers, as in Specifications 316,521 and 318,468, [both in Class 2 (ii), Cellulose &c.]. The extent of saponification may vary from 5 to 20 or 50 per cent. up to substantially complete elimination of the ester groups. If desired, the yarns may be subjected to treatment with shrinking agents to improve their extension, for example, by the process of Specification 380,504, 380,505, or 389,823. In an example, a warp of stretched yarns of cellulose acetate is padded with a 10 per cent. aqueous solution of caustic soda so that the yarn retains its own weight of liquid, and is carried directly to a series of steam heated rollers as described in Specifications 316,521 and 318,468. The first Provisional Specification refers also to Specifications 125,153, 313,404, [both in Class 2 (ii), Cellulose &c.], and 371,461.
