Abstract
Filaments, threads, yarns, or the like, or fabrics containing them, of organic esters of cellulose of high viscosity, are subjected to saponification by applying the saponifying agents to the travelling materials, and immediately drying under the influence of heat to effect quick saponification. The products have a relatively high tenacity and an affinity for cotton colours. In the case of cellulose acetate, the viscosity as measured by the rate of flow of a 6 per cent. acetone solution against a standard of glycerine at 25 DEG C. as 100, exceeds 30, and preferably is of the order of 50 or 200 or more. The high viscosity ester may be obtained, for example, according to the process of Specification 207,562, [Class 2 (ii), Cellulose &c.]. The saponifiying agent comprises caustic soda or caustic potash, or sodium silicate, trisodium phosphate, sodium acetate, or ammonia, in a medium which may contain a mono-, di-, or poly-hydric alcohol, e.g. methyl or ethyl alcohol, glycols, or glycerine. The saponifying agent may be applied to the materials by a bath treatment or by padding, the drying being effected by passing the materials over heated rollers as is described in Specifications 316,521 and 318,468, [both in Class 2 (ii), Cellulose &c.]. The extent of saponification varies from 5 to 20 or 50 per cent, up to substantially complete elimination of the ester groups. If desired, the materials may be subjected to treatment with shrinking agents to improve their extension, as is described in Specifications 380,504, 380,505, and 389,823. In an example, a warp of yarns made from cellulose acetate having a viscosity of 73 is impregnated with a 10 per cent. aqueous solution of caustic soda, so as to retain its own weight of liquid, and passed to a series of steam heated rollers as in the process of Specification 316,521 or 318,468. The second Provisional Specification refers also to Specifications 370,430, 371,461, and 400,996.
