Abstract
332,290. British Celanese, Ltd., and Taylor, W. 1. Jan. 11, 1929. Divided on 332,263. Printing yarns, threads, and the like; resist printing. - Textile filaments, yarns, threads, ribbons, tapes, straws, &c. adapted for the production of intermittently coloured, multicoloured, or cross-dyed effects, are obtained by applying a mechanical reserve at intervals to the filaments &c. while they are travelling. The invention is applicable generally, e.g. to filaments &c. of cotton, silk, wool, viscose, cuprammonium and nitrocellulose artificial silks, cellulose acetate, and other organic derivatives of cellulose. The use as a reserve of a melted wax, e.g., a mixture of refined ground nut oil and hardened whale oil, is specified. The filaments &c. treated with the reserve, or fabrics or articles containing them, may be dyed directly to obtain the colour effects, or the filaments &c. so treated, or fabrics or articles containing them, may be further treated, prior to dyeing, with substances adapted to modify the affinity of the unreserved portions for dyestuffs, e.g., unreserved portions of filaments of organic esters of cellulose may be saponified with an aqueous, alcoholic, or other solution of caustic soda, caustic potash, sodium or potassium carbonate, sodium silicate, or trisodium phosphate, e.g. 2-10 per cent of caustic soda in a mixture of equal parts of methyl alcohol and water. The application of the reserve to artificial filaments is preferably effected continuously with their production. The reserve may be applied by the methods employed according to Specification 325,823, [Class 2 (ii), Cellulose &c.], for applying a solvent or softening agent, or by printing the filaments &c. by means of an embossed or indented roller to which the reserve is supplied in liquid or paste form, or the apparatus described in Specification 332,263 may be employed.
