Abstract

501,768. Artificial filaments etc.; dyeing processes. MELLOR, A., MANN, R. J., and NOON, R. W. Sept. 9, 1937, No. 24614. [Classes 2 (ii) and 15 (ii)] Regenerated cellulose filaments, yarns, ribbons, and the like obtained by completely saponifying high tenacity cellulose organic ester materials are subjected to a swelling treatment with an aqueous solution of a strong mineral alkali in order to increase the affinity of the materials for cotton dyes, including direct dyes, azo dyes, and vat dyes. The high tenacity filaments of cellulose acetate or other cellulose organic ester may be obtained by stretching during a wet spinning process, or by stretching in presence of a softening agent subsequent to wet or dry spinning. The tenacity may be up to 6 grams per denier. The saponification may be effected by means of organic bases. For the swelling treatment of the saponified materials there may be used caustic potash or soda, lithium or barium hydroxide. Treatment with the swelling agent may be effected by dipping, or padding methods, and the yarns may be in package form, in hanks, or may be travelling from one package to another. The swelling may be effected at low temperature. The treated materials may be washed before being passed to the dye bath. Swelling and dyeing may be effected in a single bath. In examples, completely saponified high tenacity cellulose acetate yarns or fabrics containing them are swollen with caustic soda, caustic potash, or lithium hydroxide solution. The materials are then dyed with diphenyl blue-green BL, or chlorazol fast black BK. In another example, the materials are dyed in a bath containing indanthrene blue RK, indanthrene olive green B, caustic soda, and sodium hydrosulphite. Salt is added to assist exhaustion of the dye. The materials are subsequently treated with bichromate solution. Specifications 417,220, and 429,103 are referred to. The Provisional Specification includes also the treatment of high tenacity regenerated cellulose materials obtained by methods other than saponification of cellulose ester materials, and includes the treatment of films.
