Abstract
Textile materials containing filaments or fibres of organic esters of cellulose in admixture with wool or other animal fibres, are treated in an alkaline bath of such concentration, and under such conditions that the cellulose ester filaments or fibres are at least partially saponified during the treatment, and the animal fibres are substantially unaffected. The process is applicable to the treatment of mixed yarns or of fabrics formed from yarns of organic ester of cellulose and yarns of animal fibres. In the case of a mixed yarn or fabric containing cellulose acetate fibres and wool fibres, the preferred conditions for carrying out the process fall within the limits of a 2 per cent caustic soda solution for 10 minutes at 10 DEG C. and a 6 per cent caustic soda solution for 3 minutes at 20 DEG C. Within the range of conditions the wool is visibly unaffected and the cellulose acetate is saponified sufficiently to be dyed with direct cotton dyestuffs. In an example, a fabric containing yarns consisting of a mixture of cellulose acetate and wool is immersed in an aqueous solution containing 4 per cent of sodium hydroxide for 7 mins. at 5 DEG C. The resultant fabric may be dyed to an even shade with a direct cotton dyestuff. p
