Abstract
500,013. Artificial threads ; casein; dyeing textile materials. NAAMLOOZE VENNOOTSCHAP ONDERZOEKINGSINSTITUUT RESEAHCH. April 5, 1938, Nos. 10450 and 10451. Convention dates, May 11, 1937 and May 26, 1937. [Classes 2(ii). 2 (iii), and 15 (ii)] Casein fibres are rendered resistant to shrinkage or sticking in hot acid dye baths by treating them with nitrous acid and with an aldehyde or a substance, such as hexamethylene tetramine, which gives rise to an aldehyde. Nitrous acid may be added in the form of a mixture of an alkali nitrite with an acid. If, however, the casein fibres are treated with an alkali nitrite without the addition of an acid, a slow reaction takes place between acid groups in the casein and the alkali nitrite, with the liberation of sufficient quantities of nitrous acid. When treatment with nitrous acid is effected in the latter way, the casein fibres are additionally rendered resistant to swelling during washing in alkaline baths following the dyeing process. Where the treatment with nitrous acid is too drastic, the fibres become yellowed, but this defect may be removed by treatment of the fibres with a reducing bleaching agent such as sodium hyposulphite. After treatment with nitrous acid and an aldehyde, any carboxyl groups remaining in the casein molecule may be neutralized, for example with alkaline earths, and the fibres may be treated with softening agents such as glycerol, sulphonated oils, sulphonated fatty -alcohols, &c. Where the nitrous acid is formed by the reaction between the casein and an alkali nitrite, the reaction may be carried out in the presence of a neutral dehydrating salt such as sodium sulphate or magnesium sulphate. In examples, casein fibres formed by spinning an alkaline casein solution into an acid coagulating bath, are treated (a) with formaldehyde and, after washing and drying, with a solution containing sodium nitrite and acetic acid ; (b) with nitrous acid and, after washing, with formaldehyde; (c) with formaldehyde and, after drying, with a solution containing sodium nitrite and sodium sulphate. In a further example, casein fibres treated according to (a) are bleached with sodium hyposulphite and then treated with lime.
