Abstract
Pattern and cr<\>zepe effects, pleatings and like mechanical effects on natural or artificial cellulose piece-goods, knitted fabrics, loose material and threads, are rendered stable to water by subsequent conversion of the cellulose, with rentention of its structure, into a cellulose ester. If the esterification process involves treatment with an aqueous solution, the pattern &c. effect must be produced after this step of the process In the case of loose material, or thread, the effect takes the form of wave or crimping. In examples, viscose piece-goods are impregnated with potassium acetate solution, dried, then pressed on an embossing calender, and finally treated with acetic anhydride dissolved in benzine; cotton piece-goods are passed through an embossing calender and then through a solution of acetic anhydride and zinc chloride in acetic acid; cotton piece-goods are pleated by hot pressing, and then treated with a solution of benzoyl chloride in pyridine. Other esterifying agents that may be used are propionic, butyric, valerianic, isovalerianic, monochloracetic, and phthalic anhydrides, and acetyl, propionyl, butyryl, palmityl, stearoyl and benzoylchlorides. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers to treatment with an etherifying agent such as benzyl chloride. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
