Abstract

Natural cellulose, preferably in swollen condition, is impregnated with a sodium salt of a weak acid, dried, and esterified to a high degree by means of an aliphatic acid anhydride. More energetic reaction conditions are necessary than are required when a potassium salt is used (see Specification 353,978). In an example, cotton is treated with mercerizing caustic soda lye, centrifuged, immersed in an aqueous solution of sodium acetate, dried, and esterified by means of acetic anhydride at the boiling temperature. The product retains its original fibrous structure. In a further example, wood pulp is soaked in mercerizing caustic soda lye neutralized with acetic acid, dried, and esterified as in the previous example. The use of a tertiary base as catalyst in the esterification process is mentioned. Specification 343,889 also is referred to.
