Abstract

Threads composed of fibres of organic esters of undegrated cellulose obtained by the esterification of natural cellulosic fibres or of artificial fibres of undegraded cellulose, are reduced in denier and improved as regards their strength, feel, &c. by subjection to a stretching operation in the presence of a swelling agent. Suitable swelling agents are dilute acetic and formic acids, pyridine, and aqueous solutions of ammonium sulphocyanide. In examples, cellulose artificial silk which has been butyrylated or acetylated according to the process of Specification 353,978, is treated in aqueous formic or acetic acid or aqueous pyridine, and then stretched; alternatively, the stretching may follow directly on the acetylation while the material still contains acetic acid. The process is also applicable to the treatment of fibres obtained by esterifying fibres of cellulose xanthate or cellulose xanthic acid referred to in Specification 349,322.
