Abstract

318,467. British Celanese, Ltd., (Assignees of Platt, H.; and Dreyfus, C.). Sept. 1, 1928, [Convention date]. Yarns, treating with liquids, gases, and vapours. -The lustre of yarns, fabrics, or other materials made of or containing organic derivatives of cellulose, for example cellulose acetate or other cellulose esters or ethers, is reduced by precipitating therein insoluble opaque salts, preferably white, by the interaction of reagents successively applied thereto. Insoluble salts, particularly sulphates or phosphates, of alkaline earth metals, such as barium, calcium or strontium, give particularly good results. The precipitation may be effected by first treating the material with a soluble metallic salt and thereafter with a precipitating agent, the metallic radicles being preferably introduced while the material is in a swollen condition. For this purpose metallic salts which are themselves swelling agents may be employed, for example sulphocyanides of barium or other alkaline earth metals, or swelling agents such as formic acid, acetic acid or acetone may be caused to act upon the material either prior to or simultaneously with the treatment with a metallic salt solution, for example a solution of barium chloride or chlorate. As precipitating agents, aqueous solutions of sulphuric or phosphoric acid or of their soluble salts, such as the sodium, potassium or ammonium salts, may be used. Cellulose ester materials may, in addition, be subjected to a saponification, preferably superficial, either before or after the application of the metallic radicle, whereby they acquire an affinity for direct and acid dyes, while retaining their affinity for the dyes normally applied to cellulose esters and for basic dyes. The delustring effects produced are permanent and are not appreciably affected by ironing or washing, or by treatment with dry steam or other relustring agents. The process may be applied to other cellulose esters besides the acetate, for example the formate, propionate or butyrate, or to cellulose ethers, such as methyl, ethyl and benzyl cellulose, as well as to mixed materials containing other fibres, such as cotton, silk or wool, in addition to cellulose esters or ethers. In examples, cellulose acetate fabrics are (1) treated first with a solution of barium sulphocyanide, then with a 1 per cent sulphuric acid, and (2) treated first with 20 per cent formic acid solution, then with barium chloride solution and finally with 1 per cent phosphoric acid solution. Specifications 258,874, 259,899, 279,502, 281,084, 284,798, 285,941, 303,128, 323,501 and 323,785 are referred to.
