Abstract

The process of the parent Specification for treating coagulated cellulose xanthate or cellulose xanthic acid with acetic anhydride or other ortanic acid anhydride, is modified in that the treatment with anhydride is conducted in the presence of a substantial proportion of a salt of weak acid, for example, potassium acetate It is preferred that the salt shall be intimately mixed with the material to be acidylated, for example, by incorporating it in the coagulation bath, or by introducing it into the viscose before coagulation, or by arranging that the material to be acidylated shall be a cellulose xanthate such as potassium cellulose xanthate. In examples, a viscose made from wood pulp is spun into a coagulation bath containing potassium acetate and acetic acid, the resulting threads being dried and acetylated with acetic anhydride with or without a solvent according to the process of the parent Specification--the product is an acetate silk of improved resistance to boiling water and of increased fastness to ironing; alternatively, the coagulated threads may be treated at 120-130 DEG C. with butyric anhydride with or without a solvent--the product is an artificial silk having in addition to the properties stated above, a soft feel and enhanced resistance to alkalies.
