Abstract
Artificial threads are produced by spinning a solution of a resin into a coagulating bath so as to produce a strongly swollen thread which is then stretched, preferably in several stages. Suitable resins are the polymerides of compounds of the general formula CH2: CHR where R is Cl, CN, COOCH3, C6H5, NH2, OH, OCOCH3, OCOCH2Cl, COCH3, or the like; also mixed polymerides of these compounds with a -dichlorethylene, maleic acid anhydride, or esters of dicarboxylic acids with polyhydric alcohols. In examples: (1) a solution of highly viscous polyvinyl chloride in cyclohexanone is spun into 30 per cent acetic acid and the thread produced stretched in three separate stages; (2) the spinning solution of example (1) is heated and cooled to lower its viscosity and spun in a similar manner but using a higher degree of stretching; (3) a spinning solution as in example (1) is spun into an aqueous sodium perchlorate solution, and the thread stretched in three stages. The sodium perchlorate may be replaced by sodium thiocyanate in the last example. Specifications 149,295, [Class 2 (ii), Cellulose &c.], 340,138, and 385,005 are referred to.
