Abstract

312,915. I. G. Farberaiadustrie Akt.- Ges. June 2, 1928, [Convention date]. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Acts]. Cellulose xanthates, process for making filaments and films from.-A halogenated fatty acid or a mixture of such acids is added to the coagulating baths employed in the manufacture of artificial threads, bands, or films from viscose whereby the coagulating action of the bath is modified and the products have improved physical properties such as tensile strength, extensibility, lustre, and capacity for dyeing. The acid or mixture of acids may be added to any known coagulating bath for viscose in amounts limited by the solubilities of the acids. The effect of the halogenated fatty acid can be considerably increased by using the acid in an intermediate bath between the spinning bath and the spools. The use of these acids is specially advantageous when combined with a stretching of the products, for example, artificial threads may be stretched in the precipitation bath or after they have left it. In examples, monochloracetic acid or a mixture of mnno-, di- and trichloracetic acids are employed in amounts between 10 and 30 per cent of the bath.
