Abstract

Titanium dioxide is treated or intimately mixed with a compound of copper in amount insufficient to impart any substantial colouration to the titanium dioxide and is thereby rendered more suitable for incorporation in artificial silk, films, foils, or plastics, or in natural fibres such as natural silk. Textile materials containing titanium dioxide may also be subjected to like treatment with the copper compound. A solution of copper sulphate, chloride or acetate with or without an organic acid such as formic or acetic acid may be used, the titanium dioxide or material containing it being washed if necessary to remove colouration; or a water insoluble copper compound may be precipitated on the titanium dioxide etc.; or the titanium dioxide may be merely mixed with say 0,05 per cent of the copper compound; or in the case of artificial silk the copper compound may be added to a spinning or film forming solution. When regenerated cellulose or cellulose ester or ether artificial silk which has been delustred with a titanium dioxide is treated as above described dyed improved fastness to light is obtained. Dyestuffs with which this improvement results include the water soluble azo dyestuffs with a substantive affinity for regenerated cellulose, soluble or insoluble azo dyes having a direct affinity for cellulose acetate, the amino-anthraquinone dyestuffs, especially 1 . 4 - diamino - anthraquinone, 1 . 4 - diamino - oxy - anthraquinone, and 1 . 4 - di - (alkylamino) - anthraquinones, the vat dyestuffs of the indigoid series, and water-insoluble azo dyestuffs produced on the fibre, such as those produced by coupling diazotized amines with p-naphthol, arylamides of 2 : 3-oxy-naphthoic acid, or diacyl-acetyl derivatives of aromatic diamines. Examples illustrating the process are given. In the Provisional Specification, the amount of copper compound to be used is not limited in the manner above described.ALSO:Titanium dioxide is treated or intimately mixed with a compound of copper in amount insufficient to impart any substantial colouration to the titanium dioxide, and is thereby rendered more suitable for incorporation in artificial silk, films, foils, or plastics or in natural textile fibres such as natural silk.
