Abstract

Filaments having a basis of cellulose acetate which are free from high boiling solvents or plasticisers and contain a coloured (including black) pigment, are stretched until they have a tenacity of at least 2.5 grams per denier. The filaments may thereafter be substantially completely saponified. The coloured filaments obtained are of a high degree of fastness. The pigments are water-insoluble substances which have no affinity for the filaments when applied in a conventional aqueous dyebath, and carbon black, lamp black and graphite are given as examples. The pigment may be added to the spinning solution in the form of a solid pigmented base material, the said base being soluble in the spinning solution. Sufficient of this material is added to the spinning solution to yield a dope containing from 0.1 to 5.0 per cent of pigment on the weight of cellulose acetate present. The coloured filaments formed from this dope are then stretched until they have a tenacity of at least 2.5 grams per denier, while in the softened condition due to the presence of solvents, latent solvents or swelling agents, for example, steam. The stretched filaments may then be saponified by means of inorganic or organic bases, a number of which are specified. In an example, to a spinning solution containing 25 per cent of cellulose acetate in 95/5 acetone/water is added sufficient black lacquer chip material to form a solution containing 26 parts of cellulose acetate, 74 parts of acetone/water and 2-5 per cent of carbon black on the weight of the cellulose acetate. The solution is dry spun into 480 denier 40 filament yarn which is then stretched to ten times its length in steam at 135 DEG C., and finally saponified in an aqueous bath at 80 DEG C. containing 0.6 per cent of sodium hydroxide and 10 per cent of sodium acetate. The yarns are pure black and have a tenacity of over 5 grams per denier. Grey or neutral shade filaments produced by the invention may be topped with a small proportion of a direct dye, as in Specification 405,264. Specifications 459,164 and 510,761 also are referred to.
