Abstract

Artificial filaments, films, or like materials having a basis of an organic derivative of cellulose and containing polymerised ethylene oxide are subjected to a delustring treatment with a hot aqueous medium. The delustring treatment may be effected when the filaments have been formed into fabrics. The delustred materials resist relustring by agents which normally have a relustring effect on cellulose derivative materials. The ethylene oxide polymers used may range from syrupy liquid through waxy solid to rubbery compounds. Water-soluble compounds fully compatible with the cellulose derivatives employed are preferred. Proportions of 1-50 per cent based on the weight of cellulose derivative may be used. The filaments or films may be formed by dry or wet spinning or casting methods. Fine or coarse filaments including artificial bristles and straw may be obtained. The delustring liquid may contain soap, salts, pine oil, or tetrahydronaphthalene. Wet steam may be used instead of hot or boiling water. Cellulose ester or ether materials may be treated. The delustred materials have an increased affinity for dyestuffs normally used for cellulose derivatives. The materials may be dyed simultaneously with or subsequently to the delustring with hot aqueous media. Delustring may be effected simultaneously with a craping treatment of a fabric containing high twist yarns. In an example, a solution of cellulose acetate in acetone containing an ethylene oxide polymer or molecular weight about 4,000 is dry spun to form filaments which are wound on to a bobbin and immersed in boiling water until delustred. The water may contain a little sodium oleate. The delustred yarn is dyed by treatment with a hot aqueous liquid containing 1 : 4-dimethyl-aminoanthraquinone, sodium oleate, and "Celascour" (a mixture of turkey red oil, xylene, and water). Celliton Blue AF or Setacyl Direct Discharge Blue G may also be used. In another example the delustring and dyeing are carried out simultaneously. In another example, cellulose acetate yarn, obtained by dry spinning a solution of cellulose acetate containing ethylene oxide polymer, is given a crape twist in the presence of steam and then woven with a low twist cellulose acetate yarn. The fabric is then given a boil-off treatment in an aqueous bath at 98 DEG C. to develop the crape and delustre the yarn. In another example, a transparent film made by casting a solution of cellulose acetate containing an ethylene oxide polymer is treated with boiling water until the film has become opaque. The strength and elongation of the film are improved. Specification 487,652 is referred to.
