Abstract
Nitrogen-containing cellulose derivatives are produced by treating with organic bases, cellulosic material such as regenerated celluloses, incompletely etherified celluloses, celluloses incompletely esterified with carboxylic groups which are not saponified by the treatment, or celluloses which are incompletely or completely esterified with aliphatic acidyl groups. In the latter case, the first action of the base is to saponify the ester groupings. Suitable organic bases mentioned are primary and secondary alkylamines and the organic ammonium bases, such as methylamine, dimethylamine, ethylamine, diethylamine, tetramethylammonium iodide, methyltriethylammonium iodide; methylaniline and the hetercyclic bases are also referred to. The starting material may be subjected to a pretreatment with acids or alkalies, wood pulps being preferably treated by the process of Specification 249,173, [Class 2 (ii), Cellulose &c.]. The invention may be applied to cellulosic material in the form of yarn or fabric, the effect being to impart thereto an affinity for acid wool dyestuffs. In an example, the cellulosic material is heated in an autoclave with a concentrated solution of mono- or di-methylamine or ethylamine. Specification 344,480 also is referred to.
