Abstract

Machine-dried high alpha cellulose pulp is activated so as to facilitate the subsequent esterification thereof, by impregnating it while in sheet form with glacial acetic acid, propionic acid, butyric acid or a mixture of acetic and propionic or butyric acid in an amount sufficient to dampen the fibres and then immediately disintegrating the sheet into fibres. If desired, the sheet, while still hot from the drying operation, may be impregnated with the acid. The amount of acid taken up by the sheet preferably ranges from 15 to 150 per cent of its weight. Referring to the Figure, a dry sheet of cellulose pulp is withdrawn from roll 1, impregnated with glacial acetic acid on roll 5 and disintegrated by the picker-roll 7. The fluffed pulp falls on to and is carried away by a conveyer 9. If instead of a sheeted roll of pulp, small rectangular sheets are to be treated, then the sheets may be sprayed with the acid and subsequently disintegrated.
