Abstract

In the manufacture of paper, regenerated cellulose fibres are dispersed in water with the aid of e.g. 0.01 to 1% of a polyacrylic acid e.g. of molecular weight 200,000 to 860,000. The slurry thus formed may be beaten at pH = 6.5 to 8, e.g. with alkaline earth metal hydroxides or alkali metal carbonates &c. Wood pulp, rag, nylon, acrylic polymer, polyester, or cellulose acetate &c. fibres may also be present. If the regenerated cellulose fibres exceed 75%, coherence may be increased by the use of rosinalum size, or by coalescing the paper fibres with caustic soda. Titanium dioxide may be incorporated in the viscose, and the filaments may be flat. Specification 945,306 is referred to.
